THANK YOU SO MUCH for everyone who came to the shower a few weekends ago. You have no idea how touched Rui and I are by all the support and generosity you all have shown us. We've only moved over about half of all the gifts from my parents, and already we are wondering where to put it all. :-)
For those who didn't know, we had a little scare Thursday the 12th. The night before I had a bit of a backache but assumed it was just the normal kind, well, if by normal I mean carrying around an extra 30lbs or so. Then around 6am Thursday morning I woke up to crazy amounts of pain in the lower right side of my back. I tried everything from rubbing to applying heat, nothing seemed to be working.
When Rui woke up, asking if everything was alright, was about the time I started to get what felt like contractions. For the first time this pregnancy I became worried enough to call the emergency doctor-on-call answering service, who then sent us into the hospital. After a quick check-in the normal battery of tests (heart rate, blood pressure, pee in a cup, etc) was done as well as being hooked up to a fetal heart and contraction monitor.
After explaining everything to the resident, it turned out that I had a Urinary Track Infection. One that skipped the more 'normal' bladder infection and when straight for the kidney, causing the excruciating back pain. Infections, or any major changes in body chemistry, can cause the uterus to contract, accounting for my false labor. Despite all of this, the doctor told us - and who we assume was the attending or my OB over the phone outside our room - that Lily looked 'absolutely beautiful'. I was prescribed 'pregnancy-safe' antibiotics and discharged. I was still in a heck of a lot of pain, waiting for the antibiotics to kick in, so I spent the remainder of the day resting.
I had my most recent OB appointment last Tuesday, and everything looks great. Lily has a strong heartbeat, and was extra active as always when I go to to doctor. My 3-hour glucose test came back, and I do not have gestational diabetes but I should still watch how much sugar I take in. My next appointment is August 2nd, which afterwards Dr. Duguid might send me for another ultrasound to check Lily's current and estimated birth weight, make sure she is head down and all that good stuff.
That's all for today folks, if you have any questions leave a comment!
I know it's been awhile since I've seen or talked to you, but I wanted to say congratulations and it sounds like things are going really well from what Laura tells me. I wish you and Rui the best and hope to see some pictures in the future! Take care xoxo
That would have scared the hellout of me! I'm glad you had someone to call, and that it was taken care of quickly. Speaking of gifts, my friend gave me some Pampers Cruisers as a gag wedding gift. I figure one can never have too many diapers--if you are in favor of using this kind, let me know your address and I'll mail them over :0) VERY good that you don't have gestational diabetes; my mother did, and she was about 100 lbs normally and gave birth to a baby over 9 lbs (my brother)! Oi!!
Oh Kendra! I'm glad everything was okay, sucks that you have a kidney infection, but at least thats all it was! I had to laugh about the gifts! I didn't think you'd bring them all home in one day! Maybe you'll need to rent a separate apartment for it all! =)
